OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) - Over 400 kids at a metro elementary school got brand new coats Tuesday morning just ahead of fall break through FedEx Cares Operation Warm. The excitement for the event was shared among students, faculty and staff at Council Grove Elementary School. Students came in and tried the coats on with staff and other FedEx volunteers to ensure a perfect fit. "This was just a wonderful sort of like the icing on the top of the cake event for us,” school principal Stacie Fryer said. The FedEx program donates coats to schools around the country. In this case, they shipped over 420 of them to northwest Oklahoma City for free. "It's our first our first year and we were so grateful that we got chosen,” Casillas said. As a social worker for the school, Casillas said she deals with multiple programs like this one that helps parents and students navigate challenges. Coats for the kids are what she considers a big one, especially for attendance. "Those coats are very important to keep them warm at the bus stop, just to keep them warm on the playground, to keep them warm everywhere they go,” Fryer said. With fall break and some cooler temperatures on the horizon, Casillas said the timing could not have been better. The school also has a shoe closet that the public can donate to. Fryer said anyone that would like to donate can contact the school.
