MINOT, ND (KXNET) — A new non-profit is preparing to open for the new year. Moms House is a six-bed women's homeless shelter in Minot. It will be providing housing for moms and in-home services, including safety, support, food, direction, and transportation. "When you walk into Mom's House," stated its Executive Director Katlyn Nelson, "the feel is that you are not in a shelter — you are in a home." The reason for some of those feelings may be because this is a home Katlyn used to call home, which is now the new shelter. Any woman is welcome to use the services they provide. Mom's House does not get grant funding and Nelson is running everything by herself with help from volunteers. "I have always wanted to run a nonprofit," Nelson recalled. "I have had past bosses who said to me, "Katy, I think your mission in life is to run a nonprofit because you love to advocate, and you just have that drive'." MHA Nation issues statement on Bear Den fire Nelson adds the home is designed to help moms with whatever needs they may have. "What I want is I want that mom to get services with Moms House," she continued, "and build that confidence — that she can be a good mom, and we can change. It takes an army of moms to really see change. Not just in ourselves, but also in our children." Nelson found that her heart was in the nonprofit world when she was getting her masters in social work and interning at Youthworks. She says two big barriers in the Minot community are transportation and housing, and that making the right connections can help moms have the best chance of success. "What I found then in jobs following working at Youthworks is that we have a lot of barriers here in the community," Nelson concluded. "A lot of those barriers come with helping marginalized groups, suppressed populations, and low economic people connect with the services that are available here. If we can just get the connection with the services and the moms, I think we will have more success." Nelson plans to eventually purchase a lot behind the current house and build a four-plex building. Her goal is to open the shelter on January 2, 2025. Close Thanks for signing up!
