GREECE, N.Y. (WROC)—Leaders within the Greece Central School District say they wanted to formally introduce A.I. tools to their students because they're likely already using the tech in their daily lives — whether they realize it or not. "If we had more lessons on A.I., then we could really figure out how we can use it more and better, so our teachers don't mark us zero," said Ceyda Mentis, a student at Greece Olympia School. Like many of her classmates, Mentis says she already uses AI tools like Chat GPT to study. "If I'm stuck on something I'll ask for clarification," said Jayden Force, a student." A friend, Maximus Kosanouvong, adds, "the topics that I learn about and speak about in model UN, it's kind of difficult. So, I just put in my research and the facts and it outputs some helpful stuff." News 8's Oran Spitzer sat in on a ninth-grade lesson while they completed an exercise by The Social Institute. "It's so important that we empower and equip," said Laura Tierney the founder and CEO of The Social Institute. "Giving students skills, ahead of the curve can help them make positive choices." The students have different opinions on the technology. Some say it's going to "take over the world," and others are excited about the opportunity to learn more. "Any technology can be used in a good way or a bad way," said Lynn Girolamo an instructional technology teacher within the Greece Central School District. "So, our job is to help students and staff learn about those ethical uses, so they're using A.I. responsibly." In this case, Girolamo says responsible use means protecting your online identity and understanding there are accuracy issues when using A.I. "It's a tool that they now have, and they will always have," said Brad Fiege, their teacher. "So, I think, we're going to just need to help them along the way — with us — in understanding how to best use it." Fiege is one of the teachers excited about these new lessons. He says this knowledge of A.I. will help students with school down the line, and potentially, in future careers. For now, these lessons are theoretical in most classrooms, though some, have already begun piloting a school-approved tool. We're told, more classes will be able to use the tool soon and put theory into practice.
