WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW)—An event that allows families who have lost infants to grieve together will take place Tuesday evening in honor of Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day. During the annual Wave of Light event, families can walk along 50,000 pink, blue, and white lights in memory of their loved ones. There will also be a candlelight vigil, water lantern release, and a performance by Josh Sanders, a recent competitor on The Voice and a grieving parent. He will be there with his wife, sharing their personal experiences and reminding families that it's important to acknowledge their loss. "I think it's very important just for us as we walk this journey of life together, but especially, you know, in our darkest hours when you know when the funerals are over, and the families go home and you're kind of left there to start life over," Sanders said. Infant deaths increased in Kansas statewide, report says Sanders and his wife lost their son, Leelynd, on March 27, 2020. He was born at 23.5 weeks on Sanders' birthday and passed away the same day. "This is one of the first times we've honored Leelynd in this way, but also recognizing the celebration of his life and the legacy that we get to carry on through just his short time on earth," Sanders said. "It's not only for my healing, but it's for the healing of those I've never even met and maybe never will meet." Wave of Light will take place at Beech Lake near 13th Street and Webb Road from 6 to 8:30 p.m. It is free, but families must register for an event map and other details. The event is held by Bridget's Cradle, a Wichita nonprofit that creates handmade knit and crocheted cradles for babies who pass in the second trimester. Their mission is to spread awareness about pregnancy and infant loss and to comfort families. The nonprofit does accept online donations.
