WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- Recovery efforts continue after back-to-back hurricanes hit the southeast region. DC Water emergency personnel packed up their vehicles and drove to North Carolina to help restore water and sewer services after Helene. According to DC Water, 70% of Asheville, North Carolina has been without water for nearly two weeks since Hurricane Helene. Volunteers bring solar power to Hurricane Helene’s disaster zone "[It's] pretty devastating. When you receive 30-plus inches of rain over 24 hours, you're going to have a lot of different issues. So their main reservoir, where they have provided water to about 70%, is really impacted," said Gregory Vernon, Emergency Manager with DC Water. Vernon and three of his co-workers are making the seven-hour drive to help provide relief to employees and families impacted by the hurricane over the next 15 days. We're coming in as a new team, so we're really here to support them in trying to get their plan moving forward as it goes," he said. Sarah Franzheim is the Emergency Planning Coordinator, she said this trip is personal because North Carolina is where she was born and raised. "My family and friends still live out there seeing so many places that I have years and years of memories… It just it's still so very surreal and I imagine it'll be even more so when we get down there," she said. Florida neighbors band together after one-two punch from hurricanes Helene and Milton Although restoring water may be a challenge over the next two weeks, their main goal is to really lend a helping hand as people try to move forward. "I think really hoping that it's a sign of hope and encouragement to the folks that are down there," said Chris Coit, Manager of Distribution Maintenance for Water Operations. The team said because there is limited water available they’ve packed a lot of water, snacks and food to be able to be self-sufficient while they're there. (Ya-Marie Sesay/ DC News Now)
