KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Betty Rae's Ice Cream, the sweet treat shop with stores across the Kansas City metro, released a statement over the weekend confirming that its River Market location fell victim to a second burglary in the span of just a few weeks. According to reports, just after midnight on Sunday, a man broke into the River Market shop -- located at 412 Delaware Street -- and stole a safe with a few thousand dollars inside. Betty Rae’s owner calls out Mayor Lucas, Kansas City following business break-in Surveillance video showed a man in what appeared to be a ball cap, a T-shirt, a flannel, a pair of shorts, and a pair of sneakers, break the business's front door before crawling inside the building. Betty Rae's issued a statement about the theft on social media Sunday afternoon, calling the incident "beyond frustrating." The post said, "This gentleman walked away with our safe of money from lots of hard, honest work by our team serving sweet scoops for our customers on a busy weekend. We want to help find solutions. We want accountability. Something needs to change!!" This is quite the deja vu moment for the local chain, as less than a month ago, Betty Rae's and several other nearby businesses reported burglaries at the River Market. Specifically, Donutology, a small donut shop directly next to Betty Rae's, and Enzo, a restaurant about a block away, also experienced break-ins the week prior. According to Betty Rae's owner Matt Shatto, Mayor Quinton Lucas and other city officials need to do more to address the rising property crime and lack of public safety around the Kansas City metro. Shatto said in a post on LinkedIn, "We pay taxes for public safety. But we are not safe in public." He continued, "Providing local businesses money to fortify their doors is not the answer. All of our conversations this morning within our community have been about what we has private citizens can do to invest hundreds of thousands of dollars into cameras on the streets, additional security presence on the private side." River Market businesses are the latest target for break ins Lucas responded to a string of comments on the post, speaking directly with the owner and answering a number of questions and concerns from other individuals on the platform. In one comment, he wrote: "Being proactive does involve more patrols and some of what the ordinance you critiqued in the statement above and local news provides which is support for preventative measures to property crimes, allowing for better security at businesses. With steadier enforcement, I’d expect better deterrence of repeat players. That said, the young age of many of our assailants suggest that some may not be deterred in the same way most adults would be. It also suggests there may be a steady stream of new offenders. This is why people do look for ways to divert poor behaviors earlier with teens and preteens." Although Shatto has had conversations with Lucas, he told FOX4 reporter Kelli Peltier Monday that he has not heard any updates from the mayor nor the Kansas City Police Department about what they are doing to stop crime in River Market. "We want there to be a police presence here," Shatto said. "Stop the crime first, and then let's talk about what we're doing as it relates to more jail space, and then we could talk about prosecutorial situations, and all that stuff. But let's not cloud the topic. The topic is, we need to stop crime in the River Market today." Because of the fears surrounding the area at night, Shatto said multiple employees at the River Market have asked to switch to other shops because of the lack of safety and security. He said the location is the only spot out of his six metro-wide stores that has dealt with this type of crime, leading to a level of uncertainty about the future of the River Market's iconic sweet treat pit stop. There have been no updates or reports of any arrests in connection to the burglaries. However, stay tuned at FOX4 News for all the latest details regarding property crimes in the Kansas City metro.
