ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) -- In just about a week and a half, the Rochester Riverside Convention on E. Main Street will be transformed into a runway event illuminating the stage and local designers, organizations, community leaders, and more all for a good cause. With an overall theme of "City Lights," there will be three days, each with its own spotlight, featuring all things fashion with the purpose of uplifting emerging designers, regional and local businesses, and everything in-between from makeup consultants, music, and more. It all benefits the Center for Youth in Rochester and the several arms of care it reached to the community. It all kicks off Thursday, October 24th with an initial theme of 'electricity' - the evening will also rally behind Rochester's LGBTQAI+ youth transitional living program, the Arnett House. "This partnership is probably one of the most unusual that you can imagine but we always say, Meghan and I say, you can look good and do good and the community comes out, and they come out not just in their finest wear but in their finest generosity," says Elaine Spaull, Executive Director of the Center for Youth. For day two, Friday, October 25th, 'Sparkle' is the family-friendly show in support of the crisis nursery which delivers free, temporary childcare during a range of varying family emergencies. As organizations and annual traditions continue to rebuild following the COVID pandemic (Fashion Week Rochester took a pause in 2020), efforts are going into highlighting how people can rediscover longtime staples, or even find something new. "Because of Fashion Week -- now in our 14th year - we missed a year because of COVID but we're in our 14th year fully -- we are going to really keep shelters open and nurseries open and with the loss of some funding from United Way and others we're really hoping that this will make up the gap," Spaull adds. "New is our location - we're at the Downtown Convention Center so we have this big beautiful space and we've got some new designers - we've got some rodeo teens from Albany, there will be some ponies on the runway!" says Meghan Mundy, Chief Fashion Officer for Fashion Week Rochester. "We've got a new designer from Syracuse called 'Altered Eco' from Syracuse and we have a lot of our regular, Chandeliers, figgy, and all kinds of wonderful new people and models," she continues. "If you haven't come to Fashion Week before, this is the year because you can park, the bars are there, there's bathrooms, everything is there for you plus we really begin to reimagine and reinvent our downtown center which is so important to a city like ours," Spaull says. Finishing out the three-day fashion festival, Saturday the 26th is dubbed 'dazzle', which will showcase designers, models, and missions in support of the Center's runaway and homeless youth centers. "Between RIT and their school of American crafts and doing this creative jewelry, things on the runway, creations on the runway, and all of the different local designers that have been here - it's just bringing the community together," says Mundy. There are still some tables and tickets available. More details can be found here.
