SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - A teenager battling fibular hemimelia at Shriners Children's New England Hospital in Springfield is heading to Las Vegas to compete in the PGA Pro-Am golf tournament. Fans get once in a lifetime experience meeting the stars at 2024 Enshrinement A 15-year-old high school student who has used a prosthetic leg almost all his life has more mobility thanks to Shriners Children's New England. Carlos was born with fibular hemimelia which means he was missing a bone in his left leg and missing bones in his foot. He had to have a partial foot amputation at Shriners Children’s when he was 11 months old. “We have known about his condition since he was in my belly. It’s been very helpful to have Shriners Children’s since the day he was born,” said Rosalind, Carlos’ mother. Since then he has had numerous prosthetics for his leg which has helped him compete in sports, recently focusing on golf. Carlos will play in the Shriners Children's Pro-Am with professional golfers at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas from October 14th through the 20th. The opportunity of a lifetime for Carlos, “I can’t wait for the Shriners Children’s Open, and I’m so excited. Just being in Vegas is going to be such an experience. It’s going to be insane being there. Shriners Children’s is life-changing, and they really help me every single day because I walk in this prosthetic every day. In my athletic career, they’re always there to help. If I need my leg fixed or a screw comes out or anything like that, I can go to them and they’ll fit me in any time.” Carlos’ mother Rosalind said, "Whenever we need to come in, they do whatever they can to get us in, even if it’s at 7:30 a.m. No matter if it's the prosthetists, the doctors or physical therapists, we have great relationships with the staff. When Carlos had to have a couple of surgeries because his leg shifted, the physical therapists did everything to get him back walking. That was huge for him.” Local News Headlines Northampton awarded funds to reduce impact of downtown redesign MassPike overnight construction this week Which are the most popular Halloween candies in Massachusetts?
