Anthony Rizzo and Marcus Stroman are back in the mix for the Yankees. Both made the Yankees’ 26-man ALCS roster against the Cleveland Guardians after Rizzo missed the ALDS with two fractured fingers on his right hand and Stroman was left off of that round’s team. Not included on the ALCS roster, however, was Nestor Cortes, who is working his way back from a left elbow flexor strain. Rizzo had expressed hope he would be able to return for the ALCS after he was hit in the hand by a pitch on Sept. 28 in the Yankees’ second-to-last game of the regular season. In his absence, the Yankees started utilityman Oswaldo Cabrera and third baseman Jon Berti at first base during the ALDS, which they won in four games against the Kansas City Royals. Rizzo, 35, hit .223 with eight home runs in the regular season, during which he missed more than two months with a right forearm fracture. Stroman, meanwhile, pitched to a 4.31 ERA in 30 appearances (29 starts) during his first season with the Yankees but was moved to the bullpen in September. The Yankees opted against activating Stroman, 33, for the ALDS, during which they needed only three starters and carried only 11 pitchers due to off days after all but one game. Yankees manager Aaron Boone confirmed Sunday that he planned to start Carlos Rodón in Game 1, Gerrit Cole in Game 2, Clarke Schmidt in Game 3 and Luis in Game 4, meaning Stroman will likely be an option in relief against Cleveland. Cortes, who pitched to a 3.77 ERA in 31 appearances (30 starts) during the regular season, on Sunday threw his first bullpen session since going on the injured list on Sept. 25. On Sunday, pitching coach Matt Blake did not rule Cortes out for the ALCS but acknowledged the 29-year-old left-hander was likely “on the outside looking in.” With the additions of Rizzo and Stroman, the Yankees did not include rookie first baseman Ben Rice or outfielder/pinch runner Duke Ellis on the ALCS roster after carrying both for the ALDS. Rice did not appear in an ALDS game, while Ellis entered Game 4 as a pinch runner for Giancarlo Stanton. The rest of the ALCS roster was the same as the previous round’s. Luke Weaver, Clay Holmes, Tommy Kahnle, Tim Hill, Jake Cousins, Tim Mayza and Ian Hamilton filled out the bullpen. The Yankees carried two catchers in Austin Wells and Jose Trevino. In addition to Rizzo, the infield included second baseman Gleyber Torres, shortstop Anthony Volpe and third baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. Cabrera made it in his familiar utility role, while Berti was back as a speedy bench piece. Aaron Judge, Juan Soto, Alex Verdugo, Jasson Domínguez, Trent Grisham and Stanton rounded out the roster as outfielders. The Yankees announced their ALCS roster a little over eight hours before Game 1 was scheduled to start in the Bronx.
