ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Following a multi-year trend, the University of New Mexico (UNM) is seeing an increase in enrollment now breaking a record for the institution. This is the largest first-year student registration the university has ever seen in its entire history, but this growth is becoming a common trend for the school. UNM reports new trends in major choices UNM reported they have 3,642 new first-year students this year as compared to the 3,611 last year. In total, the university saw a 2.6% increase this year on its main campus (with 598 new students in total for the whole campus). Last year, the main campus had just over 22,000 students enrolled. This year, they are now over 23,000. This is the third year in a row that the campus has seen this sort of increase. UNM has also seen an increase in student retention. Other schools across the state also saw some improvements New Mexico State University saw a 4% increase in enrollment this year with now over 22,000 students enrolled at their campus. Western New Mexico University had a 5% increase in enrollment. Gilman Tunnels undergoing temporary closure Eastern New University saw the largest enrollment numbers with a 19% increase in first-year student enrollment. Schools like UNM, NMSU, and WNMU said the New Mexico Opportunity Scholarship is one of the reasons why they have experienced this growth in enrollment. In total, UNM has a total of 27,075 students this year.
