VICTOR, N.Y. (WROC) – The Western New York Wreckers, who are upstate New York's only wheelchair rugby team, held a wheelchair rugby tournament this weekend. The tournament called "The Wrecking Ball" took place at the Pinnacle Athletic Campus in Victor on October 12-13. This year`s tournament featured six teams, including teams from New York City, Akron, Pittsburgh, Maryland, New Hampshire, and the WNY Wreckers. The last tournament hosted by the Wreckers was in 2019 before the COVID pandemic. "Designed for players with varying degrees and forms of quadriplegia, wheelchair rugby is an intense and exciting sport," officials with WNY Wreckers said. "With four players from each team on the court at one time, the action is fast and the collisions are loud as players slam modified, armored wheelchairs into one another to advance the ball across the goal line to score." The WNY Wreckers were founded in 2013 and began competitive play in 2014. Dozens of people with disabilities have tried the sport with the team. Some of the disabilities include: spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injury, TAR syndrome, multiple limb amputations, and spina bifida. Officials with WNY Wreckers say hundreds of college volunteers have assisted the team and have learned about the capabilities of athletes with disabilities. This year's tournament was made possible through financial support from "Most Valuable Player" sponsor Endless Highway. Endless Highway is based in Rochester and aims to expand access to sports, recreation, and the arts for youth and adults who use mobility devices.
