HONOLULU (KHON2) -- As Florida enters its recovery stages from Hurricane Milton, there are many ways Hawaii residents can help from the islands. Blood Bank of Hawaii issues urgent call for O-negative, O-positive donors The Blood Bank of Hawaii is a member of the Blood Emergency Readiness Corps, which helps collect additional units of blood for mass transfusion emergencies on the islands and across the United States. Additionally, the coalition helps create an "immediate and available supply for emergency needs when disasters hit." On Thursday, BBH announced they have already sent an initial shipment of O blood toward Florida. Health officials are now reaching out to the public throughout the next several weeks to ensure there is enough blood supply for Hawaii hospitals and Hurricane Milton victims. Oahu residents looking to donate blood are advised to make an appointment at the nearest blood drive near them on the Blood Bank of Hawaii's website. Big Island residents can attend the upcoming Kona Blood Drive at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from Oct. 15 to Oct. 17. The drive will be open at the following times: Oct. 15 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 16 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 17 from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Find more Hawaii, Oahu, Maui and Kauai news here Concerns were raised for local blood supply since Hurricane Milton disrupted blood shipments from the mainland, specifically Florida. If the state were to experience a local shortage, reports said it is "highly unlikely we will be able to obtain blood from the mainland during this time."
