NORCO — “This is Norco. We’re going to be physical in the run game and we’re going to be dynamic in the pass game,” coach Dan Barlage said. The Cougars embodied that philosophy in a 49-7 rout of Roosevelt in a Big West Conference-North Division game Friday night. Rushing for over 300 yards as a team and adding another 88 yards in the air on an efficient 4-of-6 passing, Norco (3-4 overall, 1-1 in league) sprinted to an early lead and never looked back in its first league win of the season. After forcing a punt on Roosevelt’s first possession, the Cougars needed just two plays to travel 53 yards downfield. Sophomore running back Trevor Schneider opened the drive with a 4-yard carry, before senior quarterback Joseph Stoffel kept the ball on an option and ran untouched down the home sideline for a 49-yard touchdown. “They took Trevor, like we expected them to, and I just pulled it and ran,” Stoffel said. Coming off a two-possession loss against Murrieta Valley last week – a game Norco felt they could have won, Stoffel said – the Cougars wasted no time building an insurmountable lead to avoid another close call. The punt-touchdown trend continued for much of the evening as Norco took a 28-0 advantage by the 3:18 mark of the second quarter. Roosevelt (2-5, 0-2) got on the board late in the half by way of a touchdown pass from quarterback Blake Nadler – making his Mustang debut after transferring from Rancho Christian – to wide receiver Napoleon Espinoza. Norco wouldn’t be held down for long as they opened the second half with a 14-play scoring drive, complete with a touchdown from running back Chris Laing. Not to be outdone, both Schneider and defensive lineman-turned-fullback Kaden Cryer punched in touchdowns on the subsequent Cougar drives, the latter of which started after senior lineman Kameron Brown intercepted a Nadler pass. Schneider, Laing, Cryer and Stoffel combined for 315 yards on the ground and six touchdowns – two each for the team’s true running backs – in the blowout. “22 (Schneider) back there, he’s a special kid. Our game plan was to contain him,” Roosevelt head coach Aaron Crone said. “But they do a great job of moving the ball around all over the place and getting the ball in space.” On the other side of the ball, Crone opened the game with Matthew Ochoa under center, but the junior struggled to find a rhythm before the Mustangs turned to their transfer quarterback in Nadler. Even still, the sophomore had just 99 yards on a 50% completion percentage with one touchdown. Crone said the Mustangs are looking ahead to Monday’s practice as they continue to put the pieces together for the rest of the season. “We just got to execute,” Crone said. “Biggest thing that we’re going go into Monday is watch the film and then just go into practice. We got to execute the little things.”
