Madigan and Susan Vogeler with River Bluff Custom Homes in Fort Pierre have earned the Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist designation. The CAPS program provides training on the technical, business management and customer service skills needed to excel in the growing field of aging-in-place home construction. CAPS graduates include remodelers, builders, designers, architects and occupational therapists who assist homeowners in aging safely and comfortably in their homes. To maintain their designation, CAPS graduates must participate in continuing education or community service projects. Features that assist with aging at home include things like 36” doorways, wide walkways, walk-in showers, zero-entry entrances, open floor plans, bright lighting and easy to access areas. The Vogelers say even if you don’t need the support items now, situations can change abruptly and you may be thankful the options are already in place. The national CAPS certification was created by the National Association of Home Builders in partnership with AARP and the NAHB Research Center.
