NORTH DAKOTA (KXNET) — Starting Saturday, you can expect to see more hunters, dogs, and pickups heading out on the gravel roads. While youth season opened a week ago, Saturday is the statewide opening for Pheasant season in North Dakota. Only roosters are legal to shoot and hunters can take home a daily limit of three. With recent wildfire danger elevated, Game and Fish supervisors are asking hunters to do what they can to limit the risk of more fires. Look for blue-green algae while out hunting They say that includes knowing the current burn restrictions in the county in which you're hunting and not driving or parking vehicles on dry grass — including Off-Highway Vehicles. "You know, understand what the winds are going to do that day, you know, don't get caught, and then if you can have assets, you know, things like fire extinguishers and stuff like that with you, we do preach safety with that, you know, these fires are extremely aggressive, they're growing extremely rapid and we never want to put anyone that has no training in those situations that can be dangerous," said ND State Forest Service Fire Management Officer Ryan Melin. Melin recommends bringing along a fire extinguisher and extra water, if available and to call in any fires spotted to 911. Pheasant season closes on January 5. Close Thanks for signing up!
