Unusually warm weather continues through the middle of October. Green flags are still expected through the end of Balloon Fiesta. A moderately strong drainage wind caused a mostly static display for the Special Shapes at this morning's Balloon Fiesta, but many standard balloons still flew. Winds calmed today with record and near-record temperatures across parts of the state. Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Gallup, and Farmington have all broken record high temperatures today. Drier air moved into northern New Mexico today, but a spotty showers developed across the southern mountains, with some of that rain evaporating before reaching the ground. Those showers have ended tonight. Here in Albuquerque, conditions were perfect the Special Shapes Glowdeo and other events and Balloon Fiesta. The Northern Lights were also seen tonight across New Mexico! Balloon Fiesta's Special Shapes Rodeo should again see a green flag Friday morning. The concern is very similar to what we saw today, with a gusty north/northeast drainage wind that could result in another static display of some of the larger and more unique special shapes. Weather will once again turn calm and warm Friday afternoon, with more near-record high temperatures and sunny skies. The last weekend of Balloon Fiesta is looking pretty picture-perfect with light morning winds and mild temperatures for this time of year. Expecting green flags both Saturday and Sunday morning, but it's looking unlikely now that we'll get the box effect to set up. Saturday afternoon will again be warm with more record and near-record highs. Sunday will begin a slow cooling trend as high pressure finally begins to break down. Temperatures will continue this slow cooling trend through the middle of next week, but we are not looking at the cool-down like we were hoping for. Temperatures will stay warmer than normal through Thursday next week, with some breezy afternoon winds developing by next Tuesday.
