BELTON, Mo. – A Belton business is showing their coworker support after his 5-year-old was mauled by a dog in Independence. Coworkers and friends of the girl's father shed light on what happened and how the small business is hoping to help the family. Family shared photos of 5-year-old Aletha. Her dad, Thomas, works at The Appliance Care Company in Belton. Pippen said Thomas is on straight commission and he’s been at the hospital since the attack. “It's work but we're also kind of family,” coworker and friend Andy Davies said. “We look after each other, we try to take care of each other as best as we can.” Davies said Thomas got the call Tuesday -- Aletha was mauled by a dog. Thomas dropped everything and headed to the hospital. Pippen and his team set up this GoFundMe page to help with the bills. "He's the type of guy that will give the shirt off his back," Davies said. "We knew they'd have a lot of expenses, medical, and probably some other stuff as well. So, we just want to help as much as we can." He said Aletha has a broken collar bone, broken rib and fractured skull. She's in a medically induced coma, and on a ventilator to help her breathe. Family told Pippen Aletha had surgery Wednesday to relieve pressure on her brain. “[Thomas] said that procedure was good,” Pippen said, “that her pupils are more responsive and that the color of her skin is better.” Family told Pippen a neighbor's dog jumped the fence and attacked Aletha. Independence police said the dog's owner was not there when the attack happened. “They're screaming, screaming for help,” Pippen said, “and the way I understand it, is the owner of the dog, behind Thomas' house came out back, jumped the fence, jumped in Thomas' yard and grabbed the dog's jaws and face to relieve the clamp.” Police said the dog bit the 5-year-old around the neck. Pippen said family told him, in the next few days, doctors will back off sedation to see if Aletha can breathe on her own. Pippen said family is asking for prayers. “Power of prayer,” Pippen said. “He's reiterated that many times, please pray for my little girl. We're trying to keep our cup half full, not half empty.” Taylor said police are still working to identify the dog’s breed. He said he believes it’s a medium size dog.
