SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — This season for San Diego Padres fans has felt special — an inkling that even some outsiders have clued into as the team continues its playoff run. The team came into the season on the heels of a monumental loss with the death of beloved owner Peter Seidler last November. Since then, the Padres have continued to put Seidler and his legacy at the center of their efforts to finally give San Diego its first major league title. Now, three games into a National League Division Series where the Padres have played with palpable determination, making it all the way to the World Series does not seem entirely out of the question for San Diego as it was right before Seidler's ownership. It is a magical sentiment amongst fans that his widow, Sheel Seidler, feels too. PHOTOS: A recap of Padres Game 3 victory over Dodgers "I get a little hesitant to say that because in grief you're always looking for signs of the loved one that is passed," Sheel said on FOX 5 Wednesday. "But then to say it out loud and other people saying it out loud, absolutely it has felt magical. Heck yeah, there's magic going on." It is something Sheel says Seidler wanted for San Diego ever since he bought the team more than a decade ago. "When we put together the deal to buy the team in 2012, I just had our first daughter and I remember Peter telling me that he was so moved watching the '84 World Series on TV, he saw the fans, and he remembered always being struck by how passionate the San Diego fan base was," Sheel recalled. "Peter was motivated to give this fanbase a championship, he felt as though they deserved it," she continued. "Year-in, year-out of watching games, he's like 'Why not us?'" The spirit to deliver for San Diego that Seidler infused into the Padres has been a through line for their season heading into the electric NLDS against the Los Angeles Dodgers. But this time, the team is not only dreaming big for the city — it is also "For Peter." "That fan experience, being best-in-class and impactful community involvement have always been the cornerstones of his blueprint," she said. "So it just felt like a long time coming — that sea of San Diegans and the rally towels, something that was put in motion years ago." Sheel added the current iteration of the Padres, with their heart-shaped "PS" jersey patches designed by Seidler's daughter more than carries on his vision for what San Diego's home team could be — it epitomizes these pillars. "They really embody this concept of we're all in this together, and I'm not just talking about the team, but the city," Sheel explained. "Even on a grander scale, in terms of our grief, I felt like everybody was in that together too." They've really surrendered to that and shown how we can win games by being in this together," she continued. Seeing the team Seidler fearlessly poured himself into and its fanbase holding his memory close over the last year has been healing for Sheel and her family as they have grieved his death. "It's meant so much to us, me and the children," she said, "when we see each player come up to bat it's just a little ping of love of remembering Peter." Game 4 of the NLDS is set for 6:08 p.m. With the series at 2-1, the Padres could punch a ticket to the National League Championship Series if they pull out a win. Should the Dodgers fend off a season-ending loss at Petco Park, the series would go back to Los Angeles for Game 5 on Friday.
