BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- State and county health officials confirmed a human case of bird flu diagnosed in a person in Kern County who had contact with infected dairy cows. The California Department of Public Health said the case in Kern County is the third confirmed case of bird flu in the state and is investigating two additional possible cases. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will test for and confirm any cases of bird flu. Officials said the risk to the general public is low, but people who come in contact with infected animals are at higher risk of becoming infected, and there is no known link or contact between any of the five confirmed and unconfirmed cases of bird flu in California. All people had contact with animals on different farms, officials said in a release. Each case has involved mild symptoms including eye redness or conjunctivitis, officials said. Poultry or dairy farm workers who come in contact with infected animals are encouraged to wear personal protective equipment like N95 masks, face shields or safety goggles and gloves while working with infected or potentially infected animals.
