PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Providence Public Schools are currently providing free credit monitoring to 12,000 current and former employees who may have had their personal data leaked in a recent network breach. “We will also continue to explore any additional services we can offer to protect the security of our staff members and students. While the analysis is ongoing, at this time, there is no evidence that any personal information for students has been impacted,” said Public Information Officer Jay G. Wégimont in a statement. Providence Public School Superintendent Javier Montañez said in a letter back in September that an investigation into the network security breach earlier in the month revealed that a group claims they have access to district files. Montañez said that the investigation, which involved a “professional third-party IT agency” as well as a cyber-security company, confirmed that there was “unauthorized access” into the district’s network during the breach. In addition, an “unverified” group has claimed they have access to unspecified Providence school documents. “At this time we are still gathering more information and are conducting an analysis that will provide us greater clarity on what may have occurred, what may have been impacted, and what actions may need to be taken,” the superintendent said. Wegimont said they’ll continue to provide updates to staff members as more information becomes available. Categories: News
