PESHTIGO, Wis. (WFRV) - This week is Fire Prevention Week, and the fire danger across northeast Wisconsin is currently categorized as high or very high due to the dry conditions. Peshtigo's fire chief is urging everyone to prioritize safety and avoid outdoor burning unless absolutely necessary. Peshtigo marks 153rd anniversary of deadliest U.S. fire with commemoration "We would rather not have any outside burning taking place," said Peshtigo Fire Chief Charles Gardon. "Folks in the city can still have a cooking fire, but we try to keep it to a minimum. With everything being so dry, a fire could take off in an instant, just like it did many, many years ago here in the city of Peshtigo." Schools everywhere are educating students about safety through drills and reminders to check their alarms.
