PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A Pawtucket man is facing charges after police say he assaulted and threatened security guards and a nurse at Roger Williams Medical Center on Sunday afternoon. According to a police report obtained by Target 12, Shawn Cornwell assaulted hospital employees after becoming "irate" and told employees he would "stab them" and "shoot staff" once he was discharged. Cornwell, 47, had been waiting in an emergency room and was informed he could not leave until he was officially discharged. Police said that's when he "became aggressive with staff" and began threatening them if they got close to him. He said Cornwell walked out of the room and tried to leave the hospital. Police said two security guards and a nurse grabbed Cornwell to put him in a stretcher to restrain him, then Cornwell shoved one of the security guards and spit in their face. One of the security guards said he tried to cover Cornwell's mouth when this happened, and Cornwell ended up biting him, ripping the glove on his hand. A nurse told police that while he was helping to restrain Cornwell, he got kicked in his stomach and got spit on his shirt, according to the report. The nurse and two security guards told police they wanted to press charges. Cornwell was subsequently ordered not to trespass at Roger Williams Medical Center, a CharterCARE facility. Target 12 reached out to a CharterCARE spokesperson for comment but did not immediately hear back on Tuesday. Police charged Cornwell with two counts of simple assault, one count of assaulting a health care provider, and one count of disorderly conduct. He was arraigned Monday and did not enter a plea. A judge issued $5,000 surety bond on Monday. However, Cornwell was presented as a violator of his bail related to previous outstanding cases out of North Providence, Providence and Warwick. Cornwell was remanded to the Adult Correctional Institutions in Cranston and has a violation hearing scheduled for later this month.
