MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Many communities in East Tennessee remain battered after being slammed by Hurricane Helene, but a Memphis relief agency is helping thousands in need and also setting its sights on Hurricane Milton in Florida. In East Tennessee and throughout the Southeast, floodwaters and storms spawned from Hurricane Helene have ravaged communities and the spirit of many. "It's just heartbreaking guys, I'm telling you," said flood victim Alvin Stiles. Across a fatigued storm zone, the almost gargantuan task of cleaning up is underway, but in the midst of despair is a helping hand from neighbors from the opposite side of the Volunteer state. Major Tim Gilliam, the Area Commander of the Salvation Army Memphis and the Mid-South says they've deployed crews to East Tennessee to help those in need. "Right now, the Salvation Army is responding to the after-effects of Hurricane Helene in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, east Tennessee, and even up into the southern part of West Virginia," said Gilliam. 📡 See more breaking news, local news and weather from WREG.com for Memphis and the Mid-South. 📧 Sign up for WREG newsletters and have the latest top stories sent right to your inbox. They have also set up six mobile kitchens in Cocke, Greene, Unicoi, Carter, and Johnson Counties. "And we've also been providing emotional and spiritual care as needed," Gilliam said. As cleanup continues in East Tennessee, they're also keeping a watchful eye on Hurricane Milton in Florida. "Hurricane Milton will add some challenges. It will really be stretched to the limit as far as personnel, equipment, and resources," said Gilliam. "And that's why it's so important that our community, which is a very giving community, reach out and help us through one 800-SAL-ARMY."
