FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE)— As Hurricane Milton churns in the Gulf of Mexico, nearly the entire state of Florida is on alert with mass evacuations underway. Milton restrengthened into a category 5 hurricane Tuesday afternoon about 500 miles southwest of Tampa. The storm is expected to make landfall late Wednesday night or early Thursday morning on Florida's west central coast. Then, later Thursday— still as a hurricane— Milton is expected to emerge off of Florida's east coast. The Ealing family of Fort Wayne is currently on a cruise off of Florida's east coast. They were supposed to dock in the Bahamas on Tuesday after departing out of Port Canaveral on Monday. But Ben Ealing said there was an announcement around 8 a.m. that it was unsafe to dock in the Bahamas. So, the ship is just idle in the Straits of Florida. Ealing said he hopes that Port Canaveral fares okay during the storm so he and his family can begin their journey home. "Will we make it to Port Canaveral," Ealing asked. "And will the port be open?" But, he said he's planning to not be home on time. "No one's brought forward any contingency plan," Ealing said. "I've heard various people commenting that maybe we'll make for another port, like Miami. If we can't get into Orlando, then were going to have to rearrange flights to get home." All Wednesday flights to and from Florida out of Fort Wayne International Airport are cancelled. An FWA spokesperson said they anticipate more cancellations later in the week. Those scheduled on Allegiant Air flights should check with the airline directly for information related to their travel. Allegiant will not have agents at the airport to assist with rebooking. Passengers must go through their reservation online, or by calling customer care.
