ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The Rochester community gathering to remember the last year and the lives lost since October 7, 2023. The Jewish Federation of Greater Rochester alongside many partners held a community wide commemoration, which is said to be one of over 100 across North America. There was a remembrance room at Temple B'rith Kodesh honoring all of those killed, and a "Remembering October 7th" display that reflects on the timeline of events from that day. Local leaders told News 8 why educating yourself on the Jewish culture is important. "It's the upmost importance to educate people what Israel is, who Jews are, what Judaism is all about," Levine Center to End Hate Executive Director Monica Gebell said. "And that we're just like everybody else. We have an incredible history and incredible culture, and we enjoy sharing that with people." On Wednesday, October 16, the Jewish Federation of Greater Rochester will hold a community event with survivors of October 7 from Kibbutz Nir Oz. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. More information can be found here.
