CLOVIS, N.M. (KRQE) – After thousands of gallons of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contaminated water were dumped into a retention pond, Cannon Air Force Base officials are now able to sample soil in the area to see how much damage has been done. Former Catron County sheriff sentenced to probation in embezzlement case In July, over 7,000 gallons of water containing the forever chemical was dumped into a pond on the base. Officials say leaders were notified of the issue in August and started to remove the water. However, an independent inspector found multiple tears in the lining of the pond meaning PFAS could have seeped into the soil surrounding the area. Since the incident, the Air Force was awarded a $150,000 soil sampling contract to test PFAS levels in the ground. The investigation into the incident has since been completed. CAFB said they will release their findings on November 12.
