BRANDON, S.D. (KELO) -- October is already a week old, and many children and adults are counting down the days until Halloween. The spookiest of holidays often has kids on the hunt for a bucket full of candy, which requires a costume for trick-or-treating, and dressing up isn't always cheap. Active Generations East’s growing pains Rows of dried golden corn stalks are a common sight this time of year, but not typically in someone's front yard. "Carl's Cornfield is just a passion of fun Halloween decorating," Carl's Cornfield creator Megan Corcoran said. Megan Corcoran is the creator of Carl's Cornfield in Brandon. It's been a staple on Meadowlark Court since 2018. She gets the corn from the owners of Heartland Country Corn Maze in Harrisburg. "We don't get the corn from the corn maze, it's actually from their farm," Corcoran said. The corn may catch your eye, but it's the characters that scream Halloween. This gentleman is the inspiration behind Carl's Cornfield. "We name our animatronics so when we put them up we know 'hey, go grab this one or that one' to identify which one's which and that one just happened to be Carl, he's known as the Barnyard Butcher," Corcoran said. Corcoran says she decorates her yard on the first day of fall each year, and has always had a passion for Halloween. "I grew up in a low-income family. Halloween was a holiday that we could enjoy with or without money then," Corcoran said. "If I can go all out on Halloween and make it super exciting to come to my house, that's what I'm going to do," Corcoran added. "I do definitely enjoy getting involved in it, but she definitely leads the pack on it," Megan's fiance David Thompson said. David has been helping with Carl's Cornfield for nearly a decade and says Halloween is usually a blur. "One minute, you're handing out the candy. The next minute, we're, me and my son, we're getting dressed up and we're haunting the yard and scaring kids, having fun with kids, interacting," Thompson said. The day after Halloween last year, Corcoran started Carl's Closet, collecting used costumes to give away this year. "I think we have about 115 costumes total," Corcoran said. "From Disney princess, superheroes, creepy costumes, homemade costumes, little kid costumes, clear up to adult costumes," Corcoran added. And the costumes are quickly finding new homes. "I've got families with five little kids that want to meet up and pick out costumes for their kids and it just makes me so excited to know that I'm going to get to help make all those little faces smile on Halloween," Corcoran said. "Great to hear that people are starting to really reach out and start using it. I'm really happy and I'm proud of her for moving forward with it," Thompson said. But it wouldn't be possible without a little outside assistance. "I am grateful for everybody that helped make this kooky idea come to life," Corcoran said. "Her yard is amazing, the house is amazing, donating the costumes, it just shows that we have such great people in Brandon that really care about our community," Brandon resident Michael Gross said. Michael Gross' family owns Kingbird Coffee Shop -- a drop off location for costumes -- and encourages everyone to pitch in. "People digging through their closets, their attics, all that stuff, finding all those kids costumes that they had previous years, and just dropping them off. What do you need them for? You collect them, you're going to probably take them to Goodwill or somewhere else, why not donate them where kids that couldn't afford them can have them," Gross said. And once the calendar page turns to November, Corcoran will start the process again, accepting costume donations for Halloween 2025. "I will clean them, store them throughout the year, and come next fall I will get them all prepped, cleaned, hung up, ironed, whatnot, and post and let people know that 'hey, you need a costume, contact Carl's Closet'," Corcoran said. Carl's Closet hosted a giveaway over the weekend, but still has costumes available for this Halloween.
