SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — Hurricane Milton has continued to strengthen in the gulf and is now a powerful, major category 5 hurricane. The highest impacts from Milton look to stay south of our region, but we are continuing to monitor Milton's track closely. As of 5 p.m. Monday evening, Milton continues to move east at 10 mph as a category 5 hurricane with 180 mph sustained winds. Milton is forecasted to weaken before landfall as it comes into contact with wind shear in the eastern Gulf of Mexico. Milton is forecasted to make landfall on the Florida gulf coast on Wednesday evening bringing hurricane force winds, life threatening storm surge, and torrential rain and flooding to Florida. Georgia and South Carolina impacts As of 5 p.m. Monday evening, coastal Georgia counties and coastal South Carolina counties are under a tropical storm watch and a storm surge watch. There are also multiple hurricane and tropical storm watches and warnings across all of Florida. We have a cold front moving in from the north over the next few days. This cold front helps to keep Milton's strong center to the south in Florida. A few impacts are possible as Milton's outer edge stays in the vicinity, mainly along the coast and for McIntosh county at this time. The timing looks to be Wednesday evening into Thursday. These impacts include heavy rain, tropical storm force winds, coastal flooding with Thursday afternoon's high tide, and dangerous rip currents and marine conditions. We could see some heavy downpours Wednesday night and into Thursday morning as Milton moves east through Florida. The highest totals will be along the coast and into McIntosh county. Inland counites could see anywhere from a trace to 2 inches of rain. Wednesday night into Thursday will be windy. Tropical storm force wind gusts over 40 mph are a possibility with the highest chance of these wind gusts happening for the coast and into McIntosh county. Wobbles north and south in Milton's track are still possible at this point that could change impacts. Make sure to stay tuned into WSAV for the latest on Hurricane Milton.
