(AP Photo/Chris O'Meara)BELLEAIR BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Milton is a Category 5 hurricane and on a path to sideswipe Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula as it roars across the Gulf toward Florida’s west coast.
Milton’s growth Monday sets the stage for a dangerous storm surge in Tampa Bay and has already led to evacuation orders less than two weeks after a catastrophic Hurricane Helene swamped the same stretch of coastline.
Milton’s center could come ashore Wednesday, and the storm could remain a hurricane as it moves over Orlando and toward the Atlantic Ocean.
Some gas stations in the Tampa area have already run out of gas, but the governor says more is on the way.
