Here are some important tips:
Smoke, not the fire itself, is usually responsible for loss of life in residential structure fires.
Install smoke alarms inside every bedroom, outside of every bedroom, and on every level of the home (including basements).
Kitchens, garages, and bathrooms are typically not good locations for smoke alarms due to frequent activations in those areas.
Interconnected alarms are best. When one sounds, they all sound.
Test smoke alarms every single month by pushing the test button until the unit sounds.
Replace batteries at least once a year. Replacing them twice per year (when the time changes) is even better.
The Oklahoma City Fire Department provides “long-life smoke alarms.” It is recommended that all smoke alarms should be replaced once they have reached 10 years of age whether they still work or not.
