WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) - A Newton church is holding a special kind of community service. On Sunday, a semi-truck loaded up in front of Grace Church full of supplies to send to those living in the path of Hurricane Helene. The semi will head to North Carolina. "I was really worried we wouldn't fill the semi," said Traylee Pickens, the donation drive organizer. "I was really worried we weren't gonna have enough stuff, and I don't know if we can make it all fit." Pickens started putting together the donation drive on Wednesday after seeing pictures of the devastation on the East Coast sent to her by her dad and husband, both linemen helping with recovery. "Those pictures were terrible, so I thought, what can we do here," Pickens said. That's when she called on Grace Church in Newton for a hand. They got her a semi-truck and some volunteers. Newton mom, NC pastor work together to assist with Helene "(I want to) provide however I can serve however I can, and so I've just been put to use well here," said Kristie Stroud, a volunteer who goes to Grace Church. Another volunteer from Grace Church said he's familiar with the areas hit. "My in-laws used to live in Charlotte, so I've been up into the North Carolina area and through some of those communities," said Andrew McKinley. "It was just horrible to see the damage and just know so many people are suffering up there." Volunteers offered supplies and time. "We kinda started off with just a few people, but more and more people that were either coming to church here or just dropping off goods just decided to stay and lend a helping hand," Stroud said. "So it just kind of snowball effect." The goal is to help families who have lost everything. "I hope that we bring them hope," said Pickens. "I hope that they see that they're not by themselves. I hope that they know that we're their neighbors. We're here to help them." Organizers say it will take about two days to get to North Carolina, maybe longer. They say many roads are washed out because of the hurricane's storms.
