RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — The iconic Texas fast-food chain Whataburger is coming to the Triangle.
According to Raleigh city records, Whataburger is making plans to take over a former PDQ and Applebee's location.
Whataburger, now based in San Antonio, first opened in Corpus Christi, TX in 1950. The chain, famous for its burgers and especially beloved by those with late-night hunger pangs, has since expanded to over 900 locations across 14 states.
What will replace the Boston Market on West Friendly Avenue in Greensboro?
While the company could not confirm whether it would be opening in North Carolina, records obtained by CBS 17 showed Whataburger was in the early stages of establishing a presence in Raleigh.
Records show the company hoped to open up at 6305 Falls Of Neuse Road, which is a former PDQ Chicken location. Documents show the project includes the demolition of the existing PDQ Chicken building and parking facilities.
There were also early plans of a location at 501 E. Six Forks Road, a former Applebee's location. City records showed the project also included the demolition of the restaurant building and parking facilities.
A spokesperson for Whataburger tells CBS 17 they could not provide any updates to the projects at this time.
The Triangle locations will be Whataburger's first in North Carolina. Currently, the chain's closest restaurants are in Georgia and Tennessee.
