RAY, N.D. (KXNET) — One fatality and one critical injury have been confirmed as a direct result of the large grass fires in eastern Williams County. More than eighteen local and regional agencies have responded to the blaze, which began on October 5th. As of 11:00 a.m. on October 6th, a large fire is still burning south of Highway 2 between Ray and Tioga. The area is open and passable, but drivers should use caution, as downed power lines and poles are present on the road. Fires rage in northwestern North Dakota, power outages continue According to the William's County Sheriff's Office, a 26-year-old man from South Africa has succumbed to critical injuries caused by the fires. An additional individual with a critical injury was also treated and transported. The extent of property damage to the area is still being assessed. Williams County, Williston Emergency Management, and the North Dakota Highway Patrol are utilizing aircraft to survey the affected areas and determine the size and scope of the fire's impact.
