A Cherokee Trail defense that’s giving up 28.4 points per game has its work cut out for it. Next week: vs. Arapahoe, 7 p.m. Oct. 10. 2. Mountain Vista (6-0) won vs. No. 4 Valor Christian. 62-21: Is Mountain Vista for real? It’s time to stop asking that question after the Golden Eagles scored on each of their first seven possessions Friday night and triggered a running clock by the end of the third quarter. Austyn Modrzewski threw five TD passes and ran for another, Jack Blais ran in two scores and caught another, and Carter Daniels added a scoop-and-score as Mountain Vista beat Valor for the first time in nine tries. Columbine (5-0) at Denver East, 2 p.m. Saturday: The Rebels ground-and-pound heads to All City Stadium to take on Denver East’s salty defense in both team’s league opener. Next week: vs. Arvada West, 4 p.m. Oct. 11. 4. Valor Christian (5-1) lost at No. 2 Mountain Vista, 62-21: It took the Eagles a quarter to shake off the cobwebs. By the time they did, it was 27-0 Mountain Vista. Cash Spence scored TDs rushing and receiving, and Chase Hanosh’s 3-yard dive pulled Valor within 13 with 1:30 left in the second quarter. But the Eagles just did not have an answer for Mountain Vista’s offense. Next week: vs. No. 10 Castle View, 7 p.m. Oct. 11. 5. Legend (4-1) at No. 7 Pine Creek, 1 p.m. Saturday: The Titans haven’t given up a point in the last eight quarters. After handing Castle View its first loss of the season last week, the task gets even tougher Saturday. Next week: vs. Chaparral, 7 p.m. Oct. 11. 6. Chatfield (5-1) lost vs. No. 8 Ralston Valley, 15-12: Sophomore QB Cash Williams and senior RB Cory Bahl both ran in TDS to give the Chargers a 12-7 halftime lead, but the Chargers didn’t score again in a league opening loss to Ralston Valley. It marked the first time Chatfield has been held under 20 points this season. Next week: vs. Denver East, 7:30 p.m. Oct. 11. 7. Pine Creek (3-2) vs. No. 5 Legend, 1 p.m. Saturday: The Eagles came within a quarter of pulling a stunner at Cherry Creek last week. Can they finish the job against Legend? Next week: at Douglas County, 7 p.m. Oct. 11. 8. Ralston Valley (5-1) won at No. 6 Chatfield, 15-12: Junior QB Zeke Andrews ran in both Mustangs TDs, the last putting them ahead for good in the third quarter, and totaled 254 yards (177 passing, 77 rushing) as RV rebounded from a loss to Valor Christian last week. Throw out the 34-17 setback at Valor, and the Mustangs have allowed just 23 points in their last four wins dating back to Sept. 5. Next week: vs. Denver South, 7 p.m. Oct. 10. 9. Fairview (5-0) vs. Prairie View, 1 p.m. Saturday. The Golden Knights enter the weekend riding a three-game shutout streak. Prairie View’s only ranked opponent to date, No. 5 Legend, beat them 55-0 in Week 3. Next week: vs. Fort Collins, 7 p.m. Oct. 10. 10. Castle View (5-1) won vs. Fruita Monument, 33-16: A week after getting dealt their first loss of the season by Legend, the Sabercats ran in a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns to turn a three-point game into a runaway win. Next week: at No. 4 Valor Christian, 7 p.m. Oct. 11. Class 4A 1. Pueblo West (6-0) won at Doherty, 56-14: The Cyclones blew open a 28-14 game in the third quarter with 28 unanswered points to move to 6-0 for the first time in seven years. Pueblo West has topped 40 points in four of its six wins, setting up a showdown with Mesa Ridge in Week 7. Next week: vs. No. 4 Mesa Ridge, 7 p.m. Oct. 11. 2. Dakota Ridge (5-1) won at Ponderosa, 36-7: QB Kellen Behrendsen found Anthony Pagano for a TD to answer Ponderosa’s lone score of the game and take a 29-7 lead late in the third quarter, and the Eagles cruised from there for their fifth straight win. Next week: vs. No. 10 Heritage, 7 p.m. Oct. 10. 3. Montrose (6-0) won at Falcon, 56-6: QB Chris Mock ran in two touchdowns and threw for another as the Red Hawks built a 49-6 lead by the end of the third quarter. Montrose, 6-0 for the second time in four years, has topped 40 points in four of six wins — all by double-digit margins. Next week: vs. Doherty, 6 p.m. Oct. 11. 4. Mesa Ridge (4-1) at Widefield, noon Saturday: The Grizzlies must avoid the temptation to look past Widefield with top-ranked Pueblo West looming next Friday. Broomfield (5-1) won at Longmont, 59-0: After getting held to its lowest point total in five years by Erie last week (3), Broomfield made up for lost time with a 52-point explosion in the first half. The Eagles scored 17 combined in splitting their last two nonleague games against Legacy and Erie, but topped 40 in each of their other four games — all wins. Next week: at Adams City, 7 p.m. Oct. 10. 6. Palmer Ridge (5-1) won vs. Air Academy, 46-14: Their 29-game regular season win streak in rearview mirror after last week’s loss to Mesa Ridge, the Bears got started on another with a dominant win to begin league play. Vista Ridge (4-2) won at Liberty, 54-35: This one wasn’t quite as close as the final score indicates. Vista Ridge led 47-13 by the end of the third quarter while controlling this game almost from start to finish. The emphatic win served as a solid bounce-back following losses to 5A No. 3 Columbine and No. 1 Pueblo West in consecutive weeks. Next week: vs. Rampart, 7 p.m. Oct. 11. 9. Durango (4-2) won at Rampart, 21-6: The Demons turned up the heat after taking a one-point lead into halftime, shutting out the Rams over the final two quarters and scoring a pair of second-half TDs to secure their fourth straight win since an 0-2 start to the season. Heritage (3-3) won vs. Golden, 28-0: The Eagles opened conference play with a much-needed win after losing three of their last four to end a brutal nonconference schedule.
