SAN BERNARDINO — Thirty years after the Bloomington football program used a sledgehammer running game to set a then-national scoring record of 880 points in 14 games – all wins – the Bruin ground game was dominant again. Bloomington rushed for 431 yards in a 43-20 rout against Arroyo Valley on Thursday night in the Skyline League opener for both teams. Aaron Perez-Soto rushed for 217 yards on 19 carries to lead Bloomington (3-3 overall). “I have No. 45 (Gilbert Everhart) and No. 66 (Anthony Yazzie) to thank for making all the holes,” Perez-Soto said. “Around the third quarter, (the Hawks) started going down with injuries and they started getting tired, and I knew that we had them.” Nicholas Seventy contributed 95 yards on 17 carries, Matthew Moreno chipped in with 59 yards on nine carries and Ricardo Sanchez ran for 53 yards on six carries for Bloomington. The Bloomington offensive line of Rodrigo Lopez, Rodrigo Guerrero, Jerry Mendoza, Phillip Lopez and Marco Martinez bored holes in the Hawk defense. Yazzie made an impact as well. “I just hand it out to the fullbacks and the line,” Yazzie said. “We were really dominant. I know what we’re capable of and that’s to be an amazing team that can go deep in the playoffs.” It was 1994 when current Bloomington coach Rick Salazar helped the Bruins achieve the scoring record and win a section title. Now he watches his team succeed with a similar style. “It was a team effort – we showed up tonight,” Salazar said. “Aaron (Perez-Soto) had a great game tonight.” Asked if his old high school coach, the late Don Markham, would approve of the Bruins’ effort against Arroyo Valley, Mendoza said, “I hope so.” Related Articles High School Sports | Canyon Springs football team outpaces Heritage in Inland Valley League opener High School Sports | Murrieta Valley football team holds firm despite Norco rally in second half High School Sports | IE Varsity’s previews of the top high school football games Friday, Oct. 4 High School Sports | IE Varsity’s previews of the top high school football games Thursday, Oct. 3 High School Sports | Trio helping lift Murrieta Valley boys water polo back to the future As giddy as Bloomington was after, Arroyo Valley was just as disappointed. Hawks coach TJ Stanford was forced to watch the Bruins rip off big chunks of yardage on almost every play. “We need to go back to work,” Stanford said. “Bloomington is a good running team and a well-coached team. We just need dedication – we’re going to turn it around.” Bloomington took a lead it never relinquished on its second drive, scoring on a 49-yard touchdown pass by Israel Ramirez to make it 8-0. Arroyo Valley rallied to within 8-6 on a 20-yard touchdown run by Tyrane Thomas with 1:34 left in the first quarter. But Bloomington answered with a 36-yard scoring run by Sanchez to increase its lead to 16-6 with 8:43 left in the first half. Bloomington was well on its way to victory. Thomas led the Hawks (1-5) with 101 yards rushing on 10 carries.
