So you’re telling me there’s a chance? Yes indeed! Due to heightened solar activity, NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center has issued a geomagnetic storm warning for through Saturday. A large plume of plasma and magnetic field known as a coronal mass ejection (CME) fired off from the sun during a solar flare on Monday. When CMEs interact with our upper atmosphere, they bring electrically charged ions that collide with Earth’s magnetic field. These collisions can spark geomagnetic storms. During such storms, ions slam into atmospheric gases, releasing energy that gives us our Northern Lights. This geomagnetic storm won’t be nearly as strong as the one that caused the incredible aurora outburst back in May, however.   The best chance will be for Northern New England and up into Canada, but we will likely get some dim color down here to the naked eye. Long exposure photography will be the best way to capture this event. Categories: News, Scientifically Speaking
