FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) -- Ahead of next week's official announcement, WANE 15 has confirmed downtown parking meters now accept payment from a smartphone app. Workers could be seen putting instructional stickers on the meters Thursday afternoon. Parking meters downtown now feature instructions to pay by phone. Earlier this year, City Clerk Lana Keesling told WANE 15 that parking payments would be available on the Park Mobile app soon. She said implementation has been in the works for nearly five years. Today, Keesling told WANE 15 a press conference to explain the new app would be scheduled soon, likely Friday, October 11. While meters in Fort Wayne accept nickels, dimes and quarters, credit card payments, which began in 2018, must be at least $1. The Park Mobile app added 45 cents to the price, meaning a person paying by phone for 15 minutes would be charged $1.45, $1 minimum for the credit card and 45 cents for the app. WANE 15 learned the app will require the vehicle license plate number, as the lights on an app-fed meter will not change from red to green to indicate the time has been paid for. Parking enforcement will cross-check the spot and the license plate to verify payment. Keesling will share more details at the press conference next week.
