A man was shot by an Escondido police officer Wednesday night after officers responded to a call of a person brandishing a weapon at the Escondido Transit Center, authorities said. Someone called 911 shortly after 7:30 p.m. to report seeing the man with a gun, but then the call was disconnected. Officers went to the transit center on West Valley Parkway and chased the suspect, who headed east on Quince Street and then onto a path above a nearby flood control channel, where the shooting occurred, Escondido police Lt. Damian Jackson said in a statement. The injured man was transported to a hospital to be treated. No updated information about his condition was available early Thursday. The San Diego police homicide team will be conducting an investigation into the shooting under a countywide protocol that ensures departments don’t investigate shootings involving their own officers. No further information was immediately available early Thursday. Staff writer Caleb Lunetta contributed to this report.
