A 21-year-old man was charged with attempted murder after allegedly firing into a crowd of Greeley “auto enthusiasts” on Monday, police said. Alberto Corona was charged with attempted first-degree murder, felony menacing, vehicular eluding, disorderly conduct, driving with a revoked license, reckless driving, displaying a fictitious license plate, driving an unregistered vehicle and five counts of possessing a weapon as a previous offender, according to court records. Around 12:11 a.m. Monday, Corona drove by the Greeley crowd of nearly 60 people and allegedly fired several shots before speeding away, according to a statement from the Greeley Police Department. Officers patrolling the area immediately followed Corona, attempting multiple unsuccessful traffic stops as the 21-year-old fled south — including one that used “stop sticks” to flatten the man’s tires — police said. Corona lost control of his car at Colorado 85 and 42nd Street, crashing into a power pole, police said. The 21-year-old driver and his passenger, a 20-year-old woman, were detained and Corona was taken to a hospital to be treated for minor injuries from the crash before being booked into Weld County Jail, police said. No one at the Greeley gathering was injured and the passenger is not currently facing charges, police said.
