GREENSVILLE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Two correctional officers at Greensville Correctional Center were stabbed by an inmate that the Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) says was involved in the April death of a K-9 at another VADOC facility. According to a press release from the VADOC, the two unidentified correctional officers were stabbed at about 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 1. Both have since been treated at and released from a local hospital. The inmate accused of attacking them is 26-year-old Axel Wilfredo Ortiz Garcia. "Ortiz Garcia is a confirmed affiliate of the MS-13 gang who has also been charged in the April attack at Sussex I State Prison of a Corrections Officer and killing of her assigned K-9, Rivan," the VADOC said in the release. On Tuesday, April 2, corrections officer Kharmishia Phillip-Fields of Sussex I State Prison and her K-9, Rivan, attempted to break up a fight between multiple inmates. During that fight, Phillip-Fields was injured and the nearly 6-year-old Rivan was "violently and repeatedly stabbed and kicked by the inmates." He later died. One of those men was Ortiz Garcia, who faces charges of malicious wounding by mob, conspiracy to commit malicious wounding by mob, gang participation, being a prisoner in possession of a deadly weapon and stabbing in the commission of a felony. Prior to the April attack, Ortiz Garcia was serving 16 years after being convicted in 2018 in Richmond City Circuit Court. According to the VADOC, he was sentenced to 40 years with 27 suspended for aggravated malicious wounding and 3 years for possessing a firearm in the commission of a felony. "Due to his maximum-security status, the VADOC has been seeking a reconsideration of that ruling," the VADOC said. No other information is available as of the time of reporting.
