GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) - 'Operation Song' is a unique way for veterans and families of veterans to tell their stories. Cherokee Greendeer found that out firsthand on Wednesday afternoon. She said a friend had initially recommended the program to her and that she was excited about the experience. She said there were moments on Tuesday night when she had second thoughts, but once she started working with her professional songwriter partner Kurt Stevens her anxieties subsided. 'Operation Song' allows veterans to work with professional songwriters to create a song based on the stories of their lives. Greendeer's song honors her father George who fought in the Vietnam War. During his time serving our country, he earned two Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star, and many other awards and honors. He passed away four years ago. State legislators renew push to eliminate tax on retirement income for Wisconsin seniors "I am so proud of him, he is a great father of all of us kids and he's a good man who loves serving his community and his country," said Greendeer. "His story is one of being a true warrior." That theme of being a true warrior and defying odds showed up prominently in the song that Greendeer created with her professional songwriter partner Kurt Stevens. "You want the world to hear these veterans' stories because it's about them, what we can do to help them heal, help them be acknowledged," she said. "There's love and pride that will go home when this is all complete." "There's so many stories that have gone untold," Stevens said. "And to be able to tell them through music for people who have given so much to this country it's really an amazing honor." Stevens said he's been part of the 'Operation Song' program for about a year and that it's an honor to work with these veterans and families of veterans on the songs. He said it's always emotional for all those involved and that was no different during his time with Greendeer. "Oh my gosh he (my dad) would be so proud," said Greendeer. "They called him the indigenous Elvis. He loved music, he loved singing." 'Operation Song,' which is based in Nashville but works around the country, began in 2012. In total, they've helped to create over 1800 songs that honor veterans and tell their stories. Northwest Wisconsin Police Department warning residents about fake $20 bills During their trip to Green Bay this week, they worked with four people to create songs. Local 5 News spoke to veteran Phil Keith who was another one of those four. "I didn't know what story to tell, that's what I struggled with, so I ended up with the one that was the most common for me," he told Local 5 News. Keith said his song is mostly about his 40-year truck driving career rather than focused on his military service. He said he still really appreciated the opportunity to be part of this program and is looking forward to sharing his song with others. "It's genuine, I hope they go home singing it," he said. Keith worked with professional songwriter Matt McKinney. "Anytime you can shine a light and get veterans to open up and let them know there are people who want to hear their stories," McKinney said. The songwriters and veterans/veterans families will share their songs for the first time publicly on Thursday night at a show at the Epic Events Center in Ashwaubenon. "Several veterans have told us that this actually saved their lives or that this is the one thing that I really needed to help me process  through what I was dealing with," said Mike Byer is the executive director of 'Operation Song.'
