TEA, S.D. (KELO) - Supporting local businesses and creators can seem like a daunting task when you aren't sure where to start. Now a new storefront in Tea is offering up a one-stop place to find dozens of independent shops. Just off of Interstate 29 in Tea, you'll find Makers Exchange. Inside the big white building, there is no shortage of goods to check out from clothes and decor to repurposed vintage goods and wood creations. "So we actually have over 70 locally owned, independent business owners that come here," Bobbi Thury, co-founder of Makers Exchange, said. "They're makers, they're crafters, they're artisans, vendors." One of those vendors is Shania Rozeboom with Rainy Day Coffee Co. "Here you can find some of my roasted coffee," Rozeboom said. "I have some light, medium to dark roasts. And then I also have some little mini sample bags so if you just wanna try a few things, I have that." Fentanyl poisoning took her life and parents’ hearts Rozeboom has a coffee truck that she takes around the area, but Makers Exchange allows her to have more permanent visibility in the community. "This is nice to have a spot that's open more often and you can come anytime, get from me or shop all these awesome vendors that are here too," Rozeboom said. Thury says they created this space as a way to celebrate local businesses. "And to give them the space that they need to showcase their goods," Thury said. "And we do hope it's a place where, you know, local goods do good. That it's benefiting those that are selling, it's benefiting the customers who are buying and it's keeping things local." Hundreds of unique, locally-owned items tied together by one building and one saying: "Friends don't let friends shop at chain stores," Thury said. There is another side to Makers Exchange that's still in the works. By the end of October they hope to have a cafe and market open featuring local food producers, gourmet coffee and a waffle shop. Once that's finished, there will be a grand opening for the space on the first Saturday of November. In December they will be hosting a European-style Christmas Market.
