SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — After more than $5,000 in tools were stolen from the nonprofit Habitat for Humanity of South Hampton Roads, some community support helped volunteers get back to work Wednesday. The nonprofit is now thanking the community for helping them get back on track after someone cut into the fence at their Tidewater Drive location and broke into their truck to steal tools.   Officials with the organization told 10 On Your Side the break in caused them to halt operations at all of their job sites Tuesday, including at a rebuild of a home in Chesapeake for a single mother and her daughter.   Crews were planning to celebrate Jimmy Carter's 100th birthday by framing the master bedroom of the home when they found the tools were missing that morning. The nonprofit honors the 39th president because Carter and his wife Rosalynn were heavily involved in helping the organization.     On Wednesday morning, Habitat Volunteer Susan Bradshaw was back to work at a Suffolk job site. However, she explained the thieves took important items needed to do their job.    "The tools that were stolen were all battery-operated DeWalt tools, and they're pretty popular,” Bradshaw said.  However, after word got out about what happened, the nonprofit received support from the community to help get $1,200 worth of tools.  "We had to take a look at what was available and how much we could purchase," said Kathleen Petersen, director of development communications. "We did have some donations come in. So we were fortunately able to purchase tools to get us started and going [Wednesday] out here at this team build.” Petersen explained there's a long way to go before they're back to normal.   "The need still remains, and it's great. Our construction managers are usually working diligently to kind of figure out what the next steps are to work around the lack of tools,” Petersen said.   She added the obstacle won’t slow them down.    “We are not giving up," Petersen said. "We're out here, back at the job today, making do with what we have and continuing the mission of Habitat South Hampton Roads to provide affordable housing in our community."
