NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The Split Second Foundation is a nonprofit that helps people whose lives have changed in a split second after an injury or a stroke. "I couldn't move this leg and right arm when I first came here. I've been able to walk around. I wasn't able to walk or stand up. I wasn't able to stand up until I came here," said Byron Muse, a stroke victim. 58-year-old Byron Muse suffered a debilitating stroke almost four years ago and has since worked to get his mobility back. Like many others in his situation, Muse's hospital, Related Rehab, had run out and he made his way to Split Second Fitness. Meet ‘Mama Tee’ and get your mind right on stage at Dillard University "We want to improve people's quality of life and we do it every day right here," said Split Second Foundation CEO Mark Raymond Jr. Raymond has personal experience after suffering a traumatic spinal cord injury from a swimming accident. Split Second Fitness is patterned after a West Coast Facility he attended. "I spent my first year here doing rehab and they weren't really pushing me enough I felt. Found this place in Sacramento, and ended up spending three months there and it was a very fitness environment that just challenged you. They had the support, they had everything that you needed. What I found is that it was more of a community and I wanted to bring that energy here," said Raymond. Keeping Split Second affordable is a focus. The minimum member fee is $50 per month. In order to do so, fundraising is necessary and Thursday night, Oct. 3, is their annual show of Love Gala. Donate today to help Red Cross efforts across 10 states "Love is important, love keeps us going, love is what created this and love is gonna be what makes it grow. But that love, that seed we are hoping to plant is that many people became monthly planners and just a $25 monthly contribution makes a world of difference for the people that come here," said Raymond. In doing so, you will also be fostering ambition. "I want to be able to walk without this cane. That's my goal," said Muse. The Split Second Foundation's second location is set in New Orleans East in the spring and their show of Love Gala starts at 6 p.m. in Generations Hall.
