WAIKIKI, Hawaii (KHON2) -- Emotions were high at the Honolulu Zoo after the public said goodbye to its last two chimpanzees, a mother and son pair. Download the free KHON2 app for iOS or Android to stay informed on the latest news Forty-nine-year-old mom Kumi and 34-year-old son Kibale came to Oahu in 1994 from the St. Louis Zoo, where they would spend the next two decades in the African Sacanna with other male chimpanzees. Do you have little fire ants on your property? Here’s what you should do The pair was moved to Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville, Tex. while the Honolulu habitat undergoes improvements. Officials said both Kibale and Kumi were successfully transported and are acclimating well with a social grouping of other adult chimpanzees and the animal care team. The chimpanzees were a guest favorite at the Honolulu Zoo as people would flock to see them when they heard the chimps actively screaming and yelling, banging on walls, playfully wrestling and fighting with each other, and even spitting water at others. It’s a bittersweet feeling as we will dearly miss all of the chimps – each with a different personality and character, yet we are all very excited for them to start another chapter of their lives in new social groupings in beautiful AZA-affiliated facilities. Linda Santos, Honolulu Zoo Director According to the Honolulu Zoo, chimpanzees are listed as an endangered species by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. "They are one of the most socially complex species among all non-human primates with strong problem-solving abilities." The original chimpanzee habitat at Honolulu Zoo was built in the 1990s. The zoo is looking to renovate the viewing area and sleeping quarters. Find more Hawaii, Oahu, Maui and Kauai news here Once the renovations are complete, Kumi and Kibale will be brought back home.
