AUSTIN (KXAN) — A new survey from The National Foundation for Infectious Diseases found fewer than 1 in 5 U.S. adults are concerned about flu, COVID-19 or RSV. The survey showed many adults are not planning to get vaccinated this fall and winter, citing concerns about side effects and distrust. "When we talk about what the vaccines do really, what they help do is to prevent or reduce your risk from being hospitalized. In fact, they reduce that risk by about half. Now there are risks," explained Dr. Nirav D. Shah, principal deputy director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But Dr. Shah argues vaccines saves lives. "If you get a vaccine, you might have a sore arm, you might feel crummy for a day or two, so it's not that there are zero risks," Shah said. "But when you compare the risk of maybe a sore arm for a day versus landing in the hospital, well, to me, there's no comparison between those two." Dr. Shah argues vaccines keep hospitalizations down. "When you look at the numbers last year, just last season, 95% of the of the people who landed in the hospital because of COVID — 95% of them had not been vaccinated." CDC officials said RSV, COVID-19 and flu infections caused more than 800,000 hospitalizations during a six-month period in the fall and winter last year. "Last year, only about 18% of adults in Texas had been vaccinated against COVID. Flu vaccines rates were a little higher, but they still weren't as high as we want them to be," Shah said. To increase vaccination rates, the CDC is focusing on those at highest risk of hospitalization from the viruses. "One of the things that the CDC is doing is partnering with pharmacies across Texas to go to long term care facilities, to go to nursing homes, to meet people where they are, to offer them these vaccines, all in the hope of reducing those hospitalization numbers as much as possible," Shah said.
