SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Springfield College hosted its 10th annual Fresh Check Day on Tuesday afternoon. It's an expo that encourages students to engage in dialogue about mental health. Fresh Check is all about creating an approachable atmosphere where students are encouraged to engage in dialogue about mental health without the stigma. Fresh Check is the first step that students take in seeking out the resources that they need. This check in helps build a bridge between students and the mental health resources, "We celebrate mental health and we really bring out students faculty and staff to highlight the different ways we can take care of our mental health and really make it a fun and exciting experience," said Christine Johnson, Director of Campus Recreation and Health Promotion at Springfield College. Fresh Check removes the clinical setting and meets students where they are, "Sometimes finding it is just the hardest part so that's why we come out here so finding it isn't so hard for people so they can feel represented they can feel heard and they can feel like they gotta good fresh check," said junior student, Connor Joyce. These booths represent a judgment free space to de-stigmatize conversations surrounding mental health and suicide that often deter people from seeking help. This campus-wide movement reminds students that they are not alone and that their mental health is valued. "Sometimes a check-in all you need to remind yourself that you should be taking care of yourself. It's not gonna get any easier as you go throughout life, but you are going to add more tools to your toolbox as you keep going throughout life, which is important. hopefully we can get them a few tools today," continued Joyce.
