WHEATON, Md. (DC News Now) -- New measures are coming to Montgomery County that will prevent drunk drivers from getting behind the wheel. Starting Tuesday, ignition interlocks will be required for more Maryland drivers caught driving under the influence (DUI). The move is an update to Noah’s Law, which passed in 2016 after Montgomery County Department of Police (MCPD) Officer Noah Leotta was killed on duty in 2015 by a drunk driver.  PREVIOUS COVERAGE: Drunk driver sentenced to 10 years for killing a Montgomery County police officer “We are closing a loophole by requiring individuals who get probation before judgment to also have a shared device on their vehicles,” said Chrissy Nizer, Motor Vehicle Administrator and Governor Moore's Highway Safety Representative.  The change takes effect on Oct. 1.  “It works, and I’ve heard firsthand that from the people that have had it - they’ve seen it in the vehicle - and I’ve said, ‘Did it work?’ and they said ‘Yes, it did’ because they were tempted at times to get behind the wheel,” said Rich Leotta, father of Noah Leotta.  With the update on Tuesday, Maryland joins 23 other states and the District of Columbia in their efforts to ensure all DUI offenders drive with an interlock device.  According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the state saw a spike in drunk driving deaths between 2019 to 2021.  “In a state where last year alone on average someone was injured in a drunk driving crash every three and half hours, tomorrow’s enactment of Maryland’s newest DUI law is both welcome and overdue,” said Kurt Erickson, president of the Washington Regional Program, at Monday’s announcement of the loophole’s closure.
