(KRON) -- Speaker Nancy Pelosi, representing California's 11th congressional district in San Francisco, welcomed President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine to her office in Washington, D.C., this week. In a statement, the speaker said she had the opportunity to express her "immense admiration and respect for the courage of the Ukrainian people as they defend democracy in the face of Russia's unprovoked aggression." Pelosi revisited Zelenskyy after their last meeting in 2022 when the speaker made an impromptu trip to Ukraine. This encounter marked the highest-ranking U.S. member to meet with the president since the war against Russia first began. "We are inspired by their courage, their commitment to democracy, and their love of country." This week, the Biden-Harris administration announced a new security assistance package committing an additional $2.4 Billion in support of Ukraine to the estimated $62 billion the US has sent to Ukraine so far, according to the Council on Foreign Relations. Aside from President Zelenskyy, Pelosi also welcomed Andriy Kostin, Prosecutor General of Ukraine, and Oksana Markarova, Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States, to her office in San Francisco.
