SURRY COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) -- Surry County saw the impact of Hurricane Helene Friday morning as the Yadkin River swelled, sending flooding into the downtown area of Elkin.  The town was preparing for a weekend full of fun with the Yadkin Valley Pumpkin Festival, which has since been canceled.  One-story businesses in the downtown area of Elkin are seeing the greatest impact from having nowhere to move expensive equipment.  The co-owner of Hunts Homestyle, Matty Ponce-de-Leon, said he was out at 4 a.m. putting down sandbags with his son-in-law. He said he left for a bit and when he came back, there was a foot of water in his restaurant. He said he saw multiple items floating down the street. As he was out there retrieving those items, others offered to help in any way they could.  “I was fielding on my way across the lake ... I was just fielding telephone calls and text messages from people offering to help," Ponce-de-Leon said.  The business only opened two months ago, but Ponce-de-Leon’s son-in-law and co-owner said he is trying to stay positive.  “There’s a little bit of damage to the walls and whatnot, but all of our equipment’s good, so that should mean all of our product is still good. We’re just thanking God so far that everything is still working,” Co-owner of Hunts Homestyle Hunter Johnson said.  The water was rushing from the Yadkin River into the town. A waterfall that is typically 10 feet tall was nearly even with the risen water level.  Becky Wing, a resident of Elkin, said she goes to the library next to the river to read. She said she had never seen the water that high.  Surry County Emergency Management said that by Friday afternoon, 18,500 were without power.  Buddy Flay, a resident of Elkin, said his power was out all Friday morning.  The water began to recede by Friday at 5:30 p.m.
